Did you know that sex toys can be dated back around to 500 BC? They were called Olisbos, and were a very early version of the dildo. They were sold around the Mediterranean as "sexual refuges" for lonely ladies.

The vibrator originally debuted in 1869. It was developed by an American physician, George Taylor M.D. It was an enormous steam powered machine. Dr Taylor design it to treat what was called “female hysteria”
However, since it was the Victorian era, women were not considered to be at all sexual and it was therefore deemed a disease. Physicians of that era treated hysteria by massaging sufferers’ vulvas until they experienced dramatic relief through "paroxysm" (orgasm).
1882 and British physician Joseph Mortimer Granville designs a battery operated vibrator which was much smaller than the one designed by Taylor. This device came with attachments mot unlike those in todays vibrator kits. These then allowed the doctor to vary the sensations his patient would feel.
However, Granville was firmly opposed to using his device as a treatment for female hysteria and considered it useful only for massage of men’s skeletal muscles to treat injuries caused by overexertion.
1900-1920 The “Home” Vibrator gains popularity. As electricity became widely available around the U.S., plug-in home vibrators were one of the first electrified home appliances. Marketed to women as health and relaxation aids, vibrator advertising copy was filled with double-entendres, for example, "all the pleasure of youth … will throb within you." They were advertised in many consumer magazines.
In 1921 advertisers were now directing their ad campaigns towards men, they encouraged husbands to buy them for their wives on the premise it would keep them "young and pretty" Vibrators also began to make an appearance in porn in the late 1920’s, and they were seen as sex toys instead of medical devices.
This is just a small sample of the history of the sex toy. Oh how times have changed! From the early days of using a piece of polished wood and lots of olive oil, to having the freedom to walk into an adult store and purchase the toy of your choice. I wonder what the men and women of a hundred years ago would think of our ability to purchase these products at our whim and need?
